Pastoral Musings

Last Sunday when I was at the Mariner’s game, I was standing in line waiting to enter. Many of you who have gone, have heard the street preachers with their megaphones and signs speaking “authoritatively” at those waiting to enter. With so many there and their being so loud, most people standing in line are talking about how put off they are by this.

The family of four in front of me was standing there when the mother said to her 12/13-year-old daughter, “That’s why we don’t go to church. It’s nothing but people yelling at you.”

My heart sank. I should have said something, and I didn’t. Her response unsettled me. My lack of response unsettled me. I’m still unsettled by this approach. I found myself praying for this family during the game that they could experience an approach to faith that looks like the real Jesus. I sometimes think between those guys and myself and how we fell in love with a different Jesus.

I know proclamation matters. I know speaking truth matters, but I also think about “how” that proclamation and speaking truth happens matters as well. I’m praying we’re unsettled, dependent, and active. Lord make it true of us.

You are loved.
